As you can see, the space invaders have been updated to my style. We aren’t messing around with no pixels. I’m of the practice that I can draw the art and have the speech bubbles cover up some of it most especially if the script isn’t finalized by the time I start sketching. If Matt has a script that we’re both good with then I can draw the dialogue in with the art, I prefer this as I don’t have to waste time on parts that won’t be shown or at least make sure I can fill as much of the space or make it balanced.
There’s some thought that goes into balancing the image with the speech bubbles, they aren’t just thrown in wherever they can fit. If only I had the luxury of doing sketches and pumping out the final art along with the speech bubbles. I can get into that explanation where it’ll be a little more entertaining later.
Something you should always know about creating art is that all artists need to practice or visualize something before laying it down for a final image. We go through sketches and different versions, no image is instantly perfect and exactly how we want without some sort of referencing. If you’ve never seen an apple and were told to just draw an apple and didn’t even know what an apple was, how would you draw it? You would need a similar example say an orange or some other fruits or just say it’s a red ball/circle shape.
Here are the sketches and hope this helps you visual the process a bit more.
